Marble Falls and the “green heart” of Italy

In Umbria, in the so-called “green heart” of Italy, not far from the city of Terni and at the confluence of two rivers, the Nera and Velino, is one of the most romantic and impressive places in its beauty — the Marc Falls (Cascate delle Marmore).

As is known, in Italy, literally everything is fanned by ancient myths and legends, and the Marble Falls are no exception. There is a beautiful and touching legend, according to which, contrary to the ban of the ancient and vengeful god, the nymph Nera and the mere mortal – the shepherd Velino – fell in love with each other, and this angered the powerful celestial being. For edification, the recalcitrant nymph was turned into a river to cry forever about her lost love. Velino could not survive the separation and rushed into the waters of the river Nera, choosing death in the last “embrace” of his beloved, instead of life without it.

Marble Falls

It is believed that it was on the spot where Velino jumped into the water – and a waterfall appeared. In fact, Cascate delle Marmore is the fruit of human labor. It is one of the oldest (its construction was begun in the II century BC by the ancient Romans) and the highest man-made waterfall in Europe.

The spectacle of the three huge cascades of bubbling and rumbling water in a spray cloud glowing in the sun cannot leave anyone indifferent to the observers, and makes everyone’s heart die in admiration.

Even the name of the waterfall speaks eloquently about how unusual the view will appear to the viewer: snaking white streams of water separating from the main stream against a green background of grass and mosses, form an exquisite pattern, similar to those that can be seen on marble of only the most expensive rocks.

In the vicinity of the waterfall there is a national park and a botanical garden, as well as many interesting routes with an abundance of viewing platforms in the form of balconies, hanging over the rumbling water.

At the top of the waterfall, travelers who have climbed comfortable and scenic paths await a reward – a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains and towns nestled at their feet. And in sunny weather, on the upper viewing platforms one can observe a spectacle that is considered one of the wonders of the world: due to the peculiarities of the landscape and rising water vapor, a rainbow over a waterfall forms unusual shapes, up to an almost complete circle. And a lot of places for picnics and cozy cafes on the territory of the waterfall allow you to eat and relax, admiring the fabulous views and romantic atmosphere.
