Not friendly Antarctica

The most inhospitable place on earth is Antarctica. Here the lowest temperatures are recorded and cold and strong winds constantly blow. In 1983, the temperature was registered at minus 89 ° С, and on the warmest day the air warmed up to + 15 ° С. Oddly enough, Antarctica is one of the driest places on the planet. In the central part of the continent, in the Dry Valley, precipitation has not been for 2 million years. It is difficult to believe in it, but even in such extreme conditions life exists.

In these harsh natural conditions, the emperor penguin found refuge. A thick layer of subcutaneous fat helps him survive, and the emperor penguin can reproduce only in conditions of fierce winter.

Killer whale, fur seal and blue whale populations can be found off the coast of Antarctica. Even insects live here, but only wingless. Black springtails are one of the most common forms of life found on the icy continent. The tails are something like fleas, have a body length of just over 1 cm and live in penguin colonies.

In addition to penguins, people inhabit Antarctica. In the summer, about 5,000 scientists and service personnel are located on the permafrost territory, in winter their number is reduced to 1,000. Interestingly, Antarctica does not belong to any state, although many have tried to assign its territory. However, by agreement, it was decided to leave Antarctica as the only site on Earth where there is no host.

Not friendly Antarctica

Antarctica is the only place on our planet where there is no time zone. In just a few minutes you can bypass all the time zones of the planet.

It is interesting that in the ice of Antarctica, the heavenly guests — meteorites — are perfectly preserved. To this day, controversy continues about the meteorite found in 1984 from Mars, where bacteria fossils and traces of microorganisms were found.

Antarctica is not only the most welcoming place on Earth, but also the most interesting and little studied. Secrets and riddles of our world are kept in thick layers of ice.
