The Bogdinsko-Baskunchaksky Reserve is a natural area 50 km east of the Akhtuba River, created to preserve the intact semi-desert areas of the Astrakhan Region. The reserve is located in Akhtubinsky district and is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Through the territory of the Bogdinsko-Baskunchaksky Reserve, migrations of birds from the north of Siberia to wintering sites occur. Most of the near-water and waterfowl birds stop in the valley of the river Bitter, where the highly mineralized water flows. In the Samara region, on the Samara Luka (in the bend of the Volga river), between the Kuibyshev and Saratov reservoirs, the state natural Zhiguli reserve is located.
The Zhiguli State Nature Reserve, with an area of 2500 hectares, was organized in 1927. In 1932, the Seredysh and Shalyga Islands were annexed.
